Overview
Full House Over Close is one of the heaviest looks in the Pistol formation. It packs 21 personnel into a compressed alignment: the quarterback sits at pistol depth, the halfback lines up directly behind him, and the fullback and tight end flank the quarterback as a three-man backfield. The two receivers align in close splits toward the strength of the formation. Other Pistol sets spread the field or offset one back. This set condenses everything inside the numbers, which forces defenses to fit an extra gap on nearly every snap and draws safeties and linebackers down toward the box. The result is a downhill run structure that also sets up misdirection and play-action shots.
The personnel alignment is what separates this set. With the fullback and tight end already in the backfield, the offense can lead block to either side without motion, and the defense cannot easily tell which way the play is going. Counter Y-Lead uses the tight end as a pulling lead blocker on the counter action, while HB Stretch and HB Dive attack the edge and the A gaps from the same starting picture. Because the halfback is aligned behind the quarterback, he reaches the line with full momentum, which suits Power HB and 3DRB backs who press the hole and cut back.
The passing game grows out of that run threat. PA Boot Lt and PA Flood X-Post Stop pair heavy run action with a flood concept that puts the X receiver on a post stop against defenders who have bitten on the fake. Deep Choice Y-Option isolates the tight end out of the backfield against a linebacker, and the option route breaks away from leverage. Defenders respecting the run end up in bad matchups: linebackers carry the tight end and fullback, and the close-split receivers release into soft zone voids or against man coverage with no inside help.
Strengths
- Three players in the backfield create gap-scheme ambiguity, so the defense cannot key run direction pre-snap, and Counter Y-Lead punishes linebackers who flow to the first step
- PA Flood X-Post Stop and PA Boot Lt draw linebackers and the flat defender down hard, which opens the post stop and the deep flat against Cover 3 and Cover 1 when the curl-flat defender bites
- Deep Choice Y-Option works as a man beater, isolating the tight end on a linebacker with an option break that adjusts to leverage, and it is especially effective against Cover 1 robber and Cover 0 looks
- Close receiver splits create natural rub and stack releases, which help beat press man and give the flood levels clean separation against zone
- HB Dive and HB Stretch from the same alignment let Power HB and 3DRB backs gash nickel and dime personnel that defenses bring in to match the passing threat
Weaknesses
- The compressed alignment invites stacked boxes, and defenses in 4-4 or goal line personnel can load all gaps and win the numbers game against the base runs
- With only two receivers and the tight end starting in the backfield, quick-game answers are limited, so a well-disguised Cover 0 blitz can arrive before boot and flood routes develop
- A user-controlled edge defender or contain player can blow up PA Boot Lt by crashing the backside and taking away the quarterback's rollout path
- A small play list makes tendencies easy to read over time, and a sharp opponent will user the flat on flood looks or spy the tight end on Deep Choice Y-Option
- The close splits shrink the field horizontally, so cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined safeties can squeeze the post stop and deep routes without leaving much outside space
Usage Tips
Establish HB Dive and HB Stretch early on first down against base and nickel defenses, then go to PA Flood X-Post Stop once linebackers start triggering downhill on run keys
On short yardage and goal line downs, check the box count pre-snap: if the defense brings seven or fewer, run Counter Y-Lead or HB Dive, and if the box is overloaded, audible to PA Boot Lt to attack the vacated flat
Against man coverage indicators like press alignment and a single high safety, call Deep Choice Y-Option and consider hot routing a receiver to a slant for a quick outlet against blitz pressure
On PA Boot Lt, read the backside edge defender first: if he crashes, pull up and target the flat quickly, and if he stays home, extend the rollout to find the crosser or deep flood level
Use this set in the red zone and late in close games to control the clock, mixing Counter Y-Lead with play-action to keep safeties from committing to the run fit
