PA Boot Lt is a play-action rollout out of the Pistol Full House Over Close set that pulls the quarterback to the left edge off run fake. The single receiver split wide runs a deep comeback breaking back toward the sideline as the boot-out route, while the in-line tight end releases into the flat underneath as the safety valve. Backside protection shows the offensive line sliding to sell the run action before the QB bootlegs away, making this a play-action man and zone beater with the comeback as the primary read and the flat route as the checkdown.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flat defender and force player pre-snap since squatting corners or an aggressive edge defender crashing on the run fake will jump this concept fast. Cover 3 with a hard-flowing flat corner is the toughest shell for this play because it takes away both the comeback and the flat throw simultaneously. Cover 2 shells with a deep half safety leaving the flat wide open are the easiest to exploit since the tight end can settle underneath before the corner sinks. Post-snap, key the boundary safety rotation since late rotation into the flat means the offense should stick with the comeback route on time. Blitz packages that send extra defenders off the backside edge can beat the rollout protection, so identify overload pressure pre-snap and be ready to check into a quicker breaking play if the line cannot account for it.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or manageable third and short situations after you have established the HB Dive and HB Stretch runs from this same formation to sell the run fake. Check the flat defender pre-snap because if he widens out with the tight end you have a natural window for the comeback route to sit down against off coverage. Use the rollout to buy time against exotic pressure since the QB is moving away from the play side rush and can escape contain if the comeback is covered. Hot route the tight end into a quicker flat release against man coverage to beat aggressive corners jumping the comeback route late. Sequence this with Counter Y-Lead earlier in a drive so linebackers bite on run action and open up the boot lane on this call.
