Full House TE

Overview

Pistol Full House TE is the heaviest look in the Pistol family, running 22 personnel with two backs and two tight ends stacked behind and beside the quarterback in a full house alignment. Instead of the standard Pistol two-receiver spacing you get from Pistol Ace, Pistol Slot, or Pistol Wing sets, this set condenses nearly every eligible body inside the tackle box, leaving a single split receiver to the open side. That alignment forces the defense to declare its intentions early: if they stay in base personnel and load the box, you have a one-on-one shot with your X on the backside, and if they check to a lighter package to match your passing threats, you have four extra blockers for Mtn Power O, Counter Lead, and Mtn 0 1 Trap.

The value here comes from formation-driven confusion rather than route spacing. Full House TE hides which back is carrying and which is blocking, so Read Option and HB Dive both look identical out of the shotgun-depth Pistol alignment, and Counter Lead lets you pull across the formation with a lead blocker already in position. The play-action menu is where this set punishes aggressive users. Mtn PA Power Cross, PA Se Cross, PA Comeback, and PA TE Corner all sell the downhill run first, which pulls linebackers and safeties toward the box before your tight ends and lone receiver work into vacated intermediate windows.

Because you only have one true wideout on the field, the isolated X becomes a genuine matchup weapon. X Slant is the built-in quick answer against man coverage, and hot routing that same receiver to a fade or slant off any of the play-action concepts gives you a clean one-on-one read with no help defender in the immediate area. Meanwhile your tight ends release from tight alignments, which means they get free access off the line against zone shells and can flood the seams before safeties rotate. This set is tagged as a Gadget look for a reason: it plays like a run-heavy formation but carries a real vertical passing element off play-action.

Strengths

  • Mtn PA Power Cross and PA Se Cross create high low crossers that gut Cover 2 and Cover 3 once linebackers bite on the play-action mesh point, giving you easy chunk yardage against users who sit in zone
  • The isolated X receiver on the backside gets true one-on-one coverage with almost no help, so X Slant and a hot routed fade are reliable man beaters against Cover 1 and Cover 0
  • Two tight ends releasing from tight alignments get clean access to the seams, and PA TE Corner attacks the hole behind the corner and in front of the safety in Cover 2 and Cover 4
  • Heavy 22 personnel with a lead blocker makes Mtn Power O, Counter Lead, and Mtn 0 1 Trap legitimate short yardage and goal line answers against six man boxes
  • Read Option and HB Dive share the same backfield picture, so users cannot key the mesh point pre-snap and have to commit late

Weaknesses

  • Only one true receiver on the field means the defense can drop an extra defender into the box or roll a safety down without giving up much on the perimeter
  • Play-action concepts hold the quarterback in place, so any inside nano blitz or overloaded A gap pressure gets home before Mtn PA Power Cross or PA Se Cross develops
  • Condensed formation gives you almost no width, which lets a single user-controlled defender cover multiple route stems in the middle of the field
  • No quick empty or spread audible option out of the set, so obvious passing downs telegraph play-action and let opponents sit on the intermediate crossers
  • Backs and tight ends releasing from tight splits are easy to press and reroute, which kills route timing against physical man coverage

Usage Tips

Establish Mtn Power O and Counter Lead early on first and second down so the play-action package actually pulls linebackers forward later in the drive

Check the safety count pre-snap: two high means go to PA TE Corner or the crossers, single high with a rolled down safety means take the X Slant or hot route the isolated receiver to a fade

On short yardage and goal line, motion a tight end or use Mtn 0 1 Trap against loaded interior fronts, and go to HB Dive when the defense widens to chase the option threat

Hot route a back to a flat or block based on your pressure read, since Full House TE gives you enough bodies to fully protect against most blitz looks if you keep both backs in

Use Read Option against defenses that user the middle of the field, because a committed user defender leaves the second level unaccounted for on the keep
