The primary read is the X slant first, working to the vertical routes if a defender squats underneath or the middle is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth: a two-high shell suggests Cover 2 or Cover 4, which can squeeze the slant if the corner squats hard. Watch the slot or nickel defender's leverage, inside leverage pre-snap signals potential man coverage and a favorable slant matchup. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled defender flowing to the shallow middle, since a lurking linebacker or nickel can jump the slant route for a big play against the offense. Cover 3 with a hard-flowing curl-flat defender can undercut the slant, so be ready to see the quarterback climb the pocket and reset if the read is taken away. Blitzes off the edge with man coverage behind them are the easiest matchups for this play, since the slant hits fast before pressure closes on the quarterback.
Usage Tips
Key on the pre-snap alignment of the slot defender over the X receiver, tight or off coverage tells you whether the slant will win immediately or need a hesitation.
Use this play on short to medium yardage downs like 2nd and 5 or 3rd and short since the slant is designed to hit quickly before pressure arrives.
If you see press man across the board, throw the slant with anticipation right off the snap since the route beats man leverage almost every time.
Pair this with PA TE Corner or PA Comeback from the same set to keep defenses honest, since both plays start with similar formation looks but attack different levels of the field.
Watch for a linebacker spying the middle of the field, if he sits in the slant window check down to the vertical routes on the outside instead of forcing the throw.
