RPO Zone Alert Omaha is a run pass option out of Shotgun Trips TE Flex that pairs an inside zone run look with a two man route combo to the boundary. The backside receiver runs a quick out/flat toward the sideline while the slot defender runs a shallow drag underneath, giving the quarterback an immediate horizontal stretch read against the box count. To the field side, the single receiver on the numbers runs a vertical stem into a deep comeback/corner breaking route, giving a shot play if the defense sells out to stop the run. Primary progression is box count first (hand off the zone run if the count favors the offense), then peek at the flat/drag combo before working to the deep comeback on the perimeter if the corner sits soft.
Count the box presnap, if there are only five defenders in the box the offense will almost always hand it off, so linebackers need to fill fast. Watch the slot defender over the drag route, if he sits flat footed in a zone drop he can jump the shallow crosser and blow up the quick game. Corners playing off the line and reading the quarterback's eyes can bait the comeback route for a pick six if they sit on the route instead of biting on the vertical stem. Blitzing off the edge disrupts the quarterback's ability to read the box and can force a bad handoff read or a rushed throw before he gets to his second progression. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender takes away both the flat and drag combo, forcing the quarterback into the low percentage deep comeback throw against a deep third defender.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, the RPO logic tells you to pull and throw the flat/drag combo instead of handing it off.
Use this on early downs, first and ten or second and short, to keep defenses honest and force linebackers to respect both the run and the quick pass.
If the defense shows a hard cover 2 or cover 4 shell with the corner playing deep third, hot route the flat route into a speed out to beat a flat foot corner and pick up easy yards.
Pair this with Inside Zone and Outside Zone from the same set so defenses cannot key run versus pass presnap, then hit them with the RPO look once they start crashing linebackers downhill.
Against man coverage, look immediately to the deep comeback on the boundary since it creates natural separation off the break against a trailing corner.
