Pre snap identify if the free safety is showing single high, this play is designed to punish that exact shell with the comeback and seam combo. Watch cornerback depth on the trips side at the snap, if the corner sinks deep into a bail technique the comeback route will sit open in the window underneath him. Key the play side linebacker or nickel defender on the crossing route, a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone can jump the underneath route and force you to the seam or comeback instead. Cover 4 or Cover 6 with two deep safeties can take away both the seam and the comeback by matching routes vertically, forcing a check to the backside X on the deep post look. Beware disguised Cover 1 or Cover 3 blitzes since the play fake requires time to develop, an unblocked edge rusher can collapse the pocket before any deep route breaks open.
