Mtn Y Post is a trips based play-action passing concept out of Shotgun Trips TE Flex with 11 personnel. Pre snap motion brings the flex TE across to the trips side, and at the snap the outside receiver runs a deep vertical up the sideline while the motioned TE breaks into a deep post over the middle, the inside slot receiver runs a quick out at the sticks, and the backside single receiver runs a corner breaking route away from the trips side. The primary read progression starts with the Y post working the middle of the field against man coverage, then works out to the backside corner route and finally down to the quick out on the trips side, giving the quarterback a full field stretch that beats both zone and man coverages.
Pre snap, check if the safety alignment is single high or split, since single high with man leverage sets up the Y post to win over the middle. Watch the cornerback on the backside single receiver, if he presses or plays inside leverage the corner route has room to work to the sideline. Post snap, track any user controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, as he can undercut the post route if the quarterback holds it too long. Identify linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers signal zone drops that open the quick out route on the trips side. This play struggles against heavy blitz packages that get quick pressure before the post route develops, so have a hot route or checkdown plan against nano blitzes.
Use pre snap motion to identify man versus zone by watching if a defender follows the flex TE across the formation.
If the safety bites on the post from a single high shell, look immediately to the backside corner route for an explosive gain.
Against zone coverage with two deep safeties, hit the quick out from the slot receiver as an easy underneath completion to move the chains.
Pair this play with Mtn Fork H Choice or Y Corner Stop in the same set so the defense has to respect both the post shot and quicker underneath concepts from the same formation.
Best called on early downs or medium to long yardage situations where you want a vertical shot but still have a checkdown built in against pressure.
