Breakdown

Outside Zone out of Shotgun Trips TE Flex is a zone run play design with the offensive line flowing laterally toward the play side to stretch the edge before working combo blocks up to the second level. The diagram shows the HB taking a wide lateral path behind the line, reading blocks from the play side edge inward instead of hitting a predetermined gap. This is a zone beater run play built to attack overpursuing defensive lines and gap-shooting linebackers, with the primary read being the play side edge defender to decide between bouncing outside, bending to the cutback lane, or pressing the frontside crease.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a bubble or removed defender to the trips side pre-snap, since that often signals zone coverage rotating away and leaving the box light for the cutback. Key the play side outside linebacker or edge defender's first step: if he crashes hard inside, expect the ball carrier to bounce it outside for an explosive gain. Against odd fronts with a heavy nose or 3-technique shaded play side, this run can get clogged, so have a counter or Inside Zone check ready. Look for user-controlled linebackers flowing too fast laterally, since that opens the backside cutback lane that disciplined zone teams try to eliminate. Blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge pre-snap can blow this play up before zone blocks set, so check for overload pressure looks before the snap.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or check the box count before the snap since Outside Zone needs a numbers advantage against light fronts to hit consistently.

Identify if the defense is stacking the play side edge with an extra defender, and if so be ready to cut back against overaggressive flow.

Pair this with Inside Zone and HB Draw from the same set so defenses cannot key run direction off formation alone, forcing linebackers to respect both zone directions.

Run this on early downs (first and ten or second and medium) to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play-action shots like PA Fork or PA Crossers later in the drive.

Manually control the HB through the mesh point to patiently press the line of scrimmage and let blocks develop before making the cut, since Outside Zone lives and dies on patience.
