Y Corner Stop

Breakdown

Y Corner Stop is a trips-based passing concept out of Shotgun Trips TE Flex that isolates the Y receiver on a corner route while the stop route underneath gives a quick access throw against soft coverage. The trips side creates natural rub and pick action to clear space for the corner breaking to the sideline, while the backside receiver runs a complementary route to hold the single defender. This is a man beater first, since the corner route stresses trail technique and outside leverage defenders, but it also holds up against zone shells because the stop route sits down in soft spots and gives a quick outlet. The primary read progression starts with the Y corner route against man coverage, then works down to the stop route or backside option if the defense sits in zone and takes away the deep shot.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the corner over the Y receiver is playing press or off coverage, since press alignment signals man coverage and a green light for the corner route. Watch safety rotation after the snap, since a safety rotating over the top to help on the corner route indicates a zone shell like Cover 3 or Cover 4 that will squeeze the sideline throw. Key the underneath linebackers and their zone drops, since a defender sitting in the flat or hook zone can jump the stop route if you telegraph the throw too early. This play struggles against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with a hard flat defender and deep half safety, since both the corner and stop routes get bracketed. Watch for user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow zone, since aggressive human defenders will bait the stop route and jump the throw if you are not looking off the coverage first.

Usage Tips

Check the corner and safety alignment before the snap to determine if you are getting man or zone coverage on the trips side.

Against man coverage, throw the corner route on a rhythm timing throw before the defender can recover from the initial route stem, especially versus press or trail technique corners.

If the defense shows a two high shell, look to the stop route as your primary hot read since the corner route will be squeezed by the deep safety.

Use hot routes to adjust the underneath stop route into a flat or drag if you see linebackers sitting deep in zone drops, giving you an easier check down against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells.

Pair this play with Stick or Levels Sail in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense honest, since both plays attack similar zones but create different stress points for defenders reading your trips formation.
