Scat out of Shotgun Trips TE Flex sends the flexed TE on a vertical release from the boundary while the trips side works a shallow drag, a quick out breaking to the sideline, and a wheel route climbing up the numbers from the backfield. The RB releases outside then turns it upfield on the wheel, creating a natural pick concept with the drag and out routes clearing underneath defenders. This is a man beater that attacks trail technique and hook defenders, with the primary read starting on the wheel route matchup out of the backfield before working down to the shallow drag and finally the boundary TE vertical as a home run shot.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a linebacker or slot corner staying attached to the RB out of the backfield, since blowing that matchup on the wheel route is the biggest defensive key to shutting this down. Zone coverage with a linebacker sinking into the flat can clog the shallow drag and out combo, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball longer. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender takes away the underneath options and puts pressure on the boundary TE vertical to win one on one against a deep third defender. Man coverage without safety help over the top is the ideal shell to attack since the wheel route creates natural rub traffic against trailing defenders. If the defense shows a nano blitz look with the middle linebacker crashing, expect the RB to be occupied with a chip or release late, which can disrupt the wheel timing.

Usage Tips

Check for man coverage indicators pre-snap like tight alignment on the trips receivers and a linebacker shaded over the RB, since the wheel route is designed to exploit that matchup. If you see a single high safety rotate to the trips side, hot route the shallow drag into a deeper crosser to beat the extra defender. Use this on early downs or second and medium when defenses are still guessing between run and pass looks. Pair this with HB Draw or Same Side Zone earlier in a series to get defenses biting on the RB before hitting the wheel route for a big play.
