Breakdown

Mtn Hitch N Go is a man beater built out of Shotgun Trips TE Flex with a stacked look on the trips side. The two inside receivers on the stack run vertical stem routes that break into a hitch and a corner route respectively, creating a natural rub against man coverage, while the outside trips receiver runs a stop and go (hitch and go) to sell the underneath route before taking the top off the defense. The backside X runs a deep out breaking route that clears space along the sideline. The primary read starts with the stop and go on the outside if the cornerback bites on the hitch, then progresses inside to the hitch or the corner route depending on how the defender leverages the stack.

Defensive Reads

Check pre snap for single high safety alignment, which signals more man coverage and a green light for the stop and go double move. Watch the corner over the stack, if he sits low expecting a quick hitch he is vulnerable to the go route stacking on top of him. Identify press man alignment on the outside trips receiver, that leverage often means the corner will bite hard on the stutter step. Look for a user controlled safety rotating late to help over the top, which is the main counter to the deep shot off the stop and go. Against zone shells with linebackers sitting at the sticks, the hitch route can get swallowed, so be ready to climb to the corner route instead.

Usage Tips

Motion the stack receiver before the snap to help identify man versus zone based on whether a defender follows across the formation.

If the corner squats on the outside stop and go, work the progression inside to the hitch sitting in the void underneath.

This play thrives against man coverage on third and medium or third and long where the double move can generate a home run shot.

Pair this with Charger Wheel or Stick from the same set so defenses cannot key on the stop and go tendency after seeing it once.

Use hot routes to convert the backside X into a quick out if you diagnose a blitz, giving the quarterback a fast release valve.
