Over Pivot out of Shotgun Trips TE Flex sends the backside X on a solo go route up the boundary while the trips side stacks a deep dig, a pivot out route, and an angle route from the flexed TE, with the HB running a flat/swing route out of the backfield as a check down and blocking help. The pivot route from the inside slot is the primary man beater, since it snaps back hard against a defender's momentum to create instant separation on press or trail technique, while the deep dig behind it is the zone beater working the intermediate void against Cover 2 or Cover 3 drops. Progression starts with the pivot route for the quick access throw, moves to the deep dig if the underneath defender squats, and checks down to the HB flat route or angle route from the TE against a hard blitz.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flexed TE and inside slot receiver pre-snap since the pivot and angle combo is designed to exploit man coverage with inside leverage defenders. If the defense shows single high safety with man coverage on the outside, expect the deep dig and go route to stress the deep third, so user the free safety to help over the top. Zone defenses that sit their linebackers too shallow will get beat by the deep dig sitting down in the intermediate window, so linebackers need to gain depth quickly at the snap. Watch for a nickel or slot corner blitzing off the edge, since the HB flat route is the outlet designed to counter that pressure, and a spy or contain defender can take that away. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can jump the pivot route if the defender reads the quarterback's eyes early, so disguise coverage and delay the flat defender's drop to bait the quarterback into a mistake.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or third and short since the pivot route wins quickly against man coverage and gets the ball out before pressure arrives.
Pre-snap, identify if the corner over the pivot receiver is playing press man or off man, since press technique makes the pivot snap even more effective due to the hard break away from the defender's positioning.
If you see a two-high safety shell, prioritize the deep dig behind the pivot route since it settles into the seam between the underneath zone defenders and the safeties.
Hot route the HB to a stick or option route if the defense shows heavy blitz looks, since the natural flat route can get jumped by an aggressive slot corner or nickel defender playing a hard blitz angle.
Pair this play with HB Angle or Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and intermediate concepts, since both share similar initial action but attack different levels of the field.
