Post Rail out of Shotgun Trips TE Flex sends the three trips receivers on crossing routes underneath while the flexed TE runs a post from the boundary and the outside trips receiver rails up the sideline after selling a flat route. The three-man mesh at the bottom clears underneath zones and occupies linebackers, while the post and rail stretch the field vertically on the opposite hash. This is a man beater built on the mesh creating natural rubs to shake trailing defenders, with the post as the primary read against single-high safety looks and the rail as the outlet against off coverage or a hard safety rotation to the post side.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the rail route once the defender bites on the initial flat fake. Cover 3 with a single deep safety struggles to cover both the post and the rail simultaneously, forcing a defender to pick one and leaving the other open. Watch for a user-controlled safety sitting in the deep middle third, that defender determines whether you throw the post or work the rail on the sideline. Zone defenses that drop linebackers into the shallow crossers can jump the mesh routes early, so double move or hesitation on the underneath throws helps against a lurking user linebacker. Aggressive blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge on the TE flex side will get there fast, so throw the post quickly before the rail has time to develop against pressure.
Usage Tips
Read the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see one deep safety shaded toward the post side, target the rail route on the sideline since the post will be covered by help. If the defense shows two-high shells, the post has a soft window between the safeties before rotation, so throw it with anticipation on your first read. Use the underneath mesh crossers as your check-down against zone coverage that sits back deep, they naturally pick off man defenders trailing through traffic. This play works best on second and medium or third and long when you need a chunk play but still have a safety valve underneath. Pair Post Rail with Verticals or Mtn Y Post from this set to keep the defense guessing between vertical shots and the mesh concept, then dial up HB Draw or Inside Zone once the safeties start cheating up to respect the pass.
