The flexed TE on the backside runs a rail (corner) route while the isolated X receiver breaks off a short out at the flat, creating a natural high low stretch on that side. This is primarily a man beater, since the post and rail combo forces vertical leverage issues for man defenders while the drags occupy underneath zone defenders. The primary read progression starts with the post route for an explosive shot play, works to the rail route against single high safety looks, and checks down to the drag or flat route versus tight man coverage or if the pocket collapses.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, since that dictates whether the post or the rail route is your primary window. Watch for man coverage indicators like corners aligning tight to the trips receivers, which signals the post route has a strong chance to separate on the break. Beware of Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with defenders sinking into deep thirds or quarters, since the post can get squeezed and the checkdown drags become the better option. Key on the flexed TE's defender post snap. If that defender bails deep immediately, the rail route is being taken away, so look to the flat route or drag combo underneath. Watch for blitz packages sending extra rushers off the edge or up the middle, since the quick drag and flat routes serve as your answer to beat pressure before the post or rail routes fully develop.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or 2nd and medium when defenses are not expecting a deep shot, since the post route can house it against man coverage or busted zone assignments.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap. If you see a single high safety, prioritize the post over the top since the rail route will not have room to work against a deep third defender.

Against two high safety shells, look to the rail route first since the post will run into the safety help, and the rail can settle into the open zone between the corner and safety.

Motion or check the flexed TE's rail route into a shallow drag if you diagnose zone coverage rolling to the trips side, and use the flat route as a built in answer versus blitz looks off the edge.
