Split Y-Flex is Shotgun's 21 personnel answer for offenses that want two-back run threats without giving up crossing route depth. The quarterback works from the gun with a halfback offset and a fullback or second back split into the backfield, while the tight end flexes off the line to create a true slot body outside the numbers is not required: the Y sits in the gap between the tackle and the split receiver, which is exactly where Cover 3 curl/flat defenders and Cover 2 flat players have to make a choice. Two receivers stay wide, so the defense sees a base look that can morph into four verticals or a two-back power concept without a substitution.
Use jet motion on Jet Touch Pass and Jet PA Y Cross as your pre-snap coverage read: a defender chasing the motion means man, a static shell means zone, then commit to Mesh (man) or Flood (zone)
On second and medium against a single high safety, run Mtn Y Cross and read the crosser against the linebacker level, then check the backfield release as your outlet if the crosser gets carried
Hot route the flexed Y to a slant or drag and block one back when you see a nano or overload look, that gives you a quick answer without abandoning the concept
Keep Read Option and Inside Zone Split in rotation against nickel and dime so opponents cannot sub heavy, and pair them with Mtn RPO Peek Swing to punish crashing edge defenders
Save HB Slip Screen for after you have shown vertical concepts like Verticals HB Angle and Corner Strike, because the screen only works once the linebackers have started bailing
