HB Slip Screen out of Shotgun Split Y-Flex is a designed screen pass that gets the running back leaking out to the flat behind a wall of blockers while the offensive line and receivers sell a drop back look. The diagram shows the outside receivers pushing vertical and breaking to occupy deep defenders, the TE releasing to a shallow crossing route to clear the underneath area, and the offensive line holding to disguise the screen before releasing into their blocking angles. The primary read is the HB out of the backfield, since this is a designed screen where the quarterback's eyes go straight to the back releasing to the flat rather than progressing through the route combo upstream.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with aggressive user blitzes is the biggest weakness for this play, since defenders flow upfield past the blockers and have no angle back to the flat. Zone defenses that keep linebackers patient and read the backfield can sit on the screen and blow it up for a loss. Watch the defensive ends and outside linebackers, if they widen or crash without containment discipline the screen lane opens instantly. On the user side, spy or lurk defenders sitting in the shallow flat area are the counter, they can jump the throw before the blockers set up. Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells with disciplined linebacker eyes are the toughest shells to beat with this concept since the shallow crosser and flat defender can both key the backfield action.

Usage Tips

Call this against aggressive user blitzes or defenses that bring extra pressure, since the delayed release gets defenders running past the play. Watch pre-snap for defensive linemen crashing hard or linebackers creeping to the line, both are green lights for HB Slip Screen. Hot route the backside receiver to a hitch or quick out if you see a zone shell that keeps a defender sitting underneath on the screen side. Use this play on early downs after establishing inside runs so linebackers bite on run fits and flow away from the screen lane. Pair it in a sequence with HB Draw and Read Option from this same set so defenses respect the run action and hesitate before diagnosing the screen.
