Y Shallow Cross out of Shotgun Split Y-Flex is a five man protection concept built around a deep crossing route from the Y receiver that stretches the field horizontally underneath a vertical clear out. The backside slot runs a shallow drag from the opposite side to the flat while the outside receiver on that side runs a quick out breaking corner route toward the sideline, and the boundary receiver runs a deep in breaking route working over the middle. This is a man beater first, since the crossing routes create natural rub traffic and separation against trailing defenders, but the horizontal stretch also gives you answers versus zone drops. Primary read starts with the deep crosser working left to right, then progresses to the shallow drag underneath if the linebackers carry the crosser downfield.
Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop signals zone coverage that will squeeze the shallow drag and crosser passing lanes. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or spying the crosser, since this lurk threat can jump the underneath routes and turn it into a pick six. Identify press man coverage on the outside receivers pre-snap, since it slows their release and disrupts the timing of the flat and out breaking routes. Key the safety rotation after the snap, if both safeties bail into deep zones the crosser will have room to work but if one safety triggers downhill fast it signals man coverage with underneath help. Cover 3 with an aggressive flat corner can undercut the shallow drag route, so be ready to reset your progression to the deep crosser if you see the corner squat instead of carrying vertical.
Check the middle of the field pre-snap because this play thrives when you diagnose single high safety looks, since the deep crosser has room to work against man coverage without deep help over the top.
If the defense shows two high safeties, hot route the flat route into a quick out to beat off man coverage or use it as a checkdown versus soft zone.
On third and medium situations, trust the deep crosser over the middle since it clears out underneath defenders and creates a natural pick against man coverage.
Pair this play with HB Slip Screen or HB Draw in your play calling sequence to keep linebackers from sitting on the shallow drag and crosser routes.
Use Corner Strike or Y Post from the same set after running Y Shallow Cross a few times so the defense has to respect the deep shots off similar formation and route distribution.
