Backs Cross is a crossing route concept out of Shotgun Split Y-Flex with 21 personnel that puts both backs in the pattern working opposite directions underneath a deep in-cut and a deep corner. Off the snap the two backs (red routes) cross the field just past the line, one settling into a shallow drag to the left while the other works the swing to the right side flat, with the TE running a deep in behind them and the far outside receiver stemming a deep corner up the sideline. This is a man beater built to create natural rub traffic on the crossing backs while the corner route stretches the defense vertically, so the primary read is backfield crosser to backfield crosser, then to the TE breaking in, with the corner as the home run shot if a defender bites on the underneath traffic.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a linebacker or slot defender sitting directly in the crossing lane before the snap, that alignment signals a robber or lurk concept designed to jump the backfield crossers. If the secondary shows two deep safeties with corners playing off, the underneath crossers will have room but the corner route on the perimeter will be covered, take the check down. Man coverage on the running backs from linebackers is the biggest green light, the natural pick from the crossing action almost guarantees separation on one side. Zone blitzes that bring five rushers while dropping a linebacker into the crossing lane can disrupt timing, so identify pre-snap if the defense is stemming toward an overload look. A single high safety rotating late to the corner route side means the deep shot is live, but if that safety stays deep the whole play, stick strictly to the backfield crossers and TE in.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick alignment check to see if a linebacker or safety is shaded over the crossing backs, since that defender is the key to the whole concept.

Against man coverage let the backs run their natural crossing paths and trust the rub, the picks created by the traffic almost always spring one back open in the shallow zone.

Against zone shells with underneath defenders sitting, hot route the crossing back to a quicker option or check to the TE in route sooner since the crossers will be sitting in the same window as the flat and hook defenders.

Save the deep corner route for third and long or two minute situations when the defense is playing off coverage or has to respect the sideline shot, otherwise take the easy completion underneath.

Pair this with Y Cross or Mtn Y Cross from the same set to keep the defense guessing between single high crosser reads and true double backfield crossers, forcing linebackers to widen their run fits.
