Breakdown

Spot n Go out of Shotgun Split Y-Flex 21 personnel is a classic Spot concept married with a vertical shot tag on the backside, giving you a quick underneath zone beater with a home run threat built in. The frontside runs the traditional Spot combination: a flat route, a corner route, and a hitch or spot route underneath sitting in the hole against zone drops, while the backside receiver runs a go route to stress the deep half and hold the safety over the top. Primary read progression starts with the backside go route on a pre-snap coverage check against single high or man coverage, then works to the underneath spot and flat combo if the safety rotates over the top or the defense shows zone shell, using the flat as your checkdown outlet against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the safety is showing single high or two high, single high alignment tells you the go route has a one on one matchup on the backside and should be your first read. Watch cornerback press alignment on the go route side, soft coverage or a corner playing off invites an easy pitch and catch on the vertical shot before the underneath routes even matter. Post-snap, track linebacker depth in the middle of the field, shallow linebackers sitting on the spot route will bait you into the flat instead, so read their drop before committing to the throw. This play struggles against man coverage with a deep half safety over the top of the go route, since the underneath spot and flat get squeezed by man defenders trailing tightly with no room to sit down. Beware of user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone, a smart user will jump the flat route anticipating the checkdown, so look off that side with your eyes before resetting to the spot route.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety cheating toward the go route side, take the shot early before the underneath routes even develop.

Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells, work the spot route sitting in the hook zone since it settles right in the void created by the flat and corner clearing out the underneath defenders.

Use the flat route as your answer versus blitz looks, it is the fastest developing route in the concept and gives you a safe outlet when the protection breaks down.

Pair this play with Y Cross or Mtn Y Cross earlier in a series so the defense respects the crossing routes, then come back to Spot n Go to hit the go route when corners start jumping underneath routes.

This is a strong 2nd and medium to 3rd and short call since the spot route is high percentage, but do not be afraid to take the go route shot on 1st down if the coverage shell tips single high pre-snap.
