Corner Strike is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Split Y-Flex with 21 personnel that isolates a deep corner route on the right side. The TE releases from the line and breaks outside on the corner, while the two inside receivers run deep crossers to the opposite hash and the left slot runs a deep out, giving you four vertical stretch routes and one shallow drag off the backfield. This is primarily a man beater designed to attack outside leverage defenders and safeties biting on crossers, with the corner route as the clear first read against single high or man coverage, and the crossers as the check down progression if the corner is capped.

Defensive Reads

Watch the corner over the TE at the snap, if he opens his hips to run with the corner route and there is no safety rotating over, this play beats him every time. Key the deep safeties before the snap, a single high safety leaves the corner route on an island against man coverage, which is the ideal matchup for this concept. If the defense shows two high safeties and one rotates down to the corner side post snap, that is a zone shell designed to take away the deep shot, so bail to the crossing routes. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in a lurk spot near the crossing routes, since that indicates a Cover 3 or Tampa 2 look meant to jump the intermediate throws. Zone blitzes with a linebacker dropping into the corner route lane can disguise pressure, so check the box count and be ready to hit the underlying crosser quickly if you see extra rushers off the edge.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing single high or two high before the snap since this play thrives against man coverage with one deep safety.

Look at the corner and safety alignment over the TE side, if the corner is playing tight man with no safety help over the top, throw the corner route immediately off the snap.

If you see two high safeties rotating to the corner route side, work the progression down to the crossing routes underneath since the middle of the field will be vacated.

Use hot routes to convert the backside deep out into a hitch if you are facing a soft zone shell to get a quicker, safer completion.

Pair this play with Y Cross or Mesh Post Wheel in the same set to keep the defense guessing between the outside corner shot and the inside crossing concepts, forcing linebackers to defend both levels.
