Inside Zone Split lines up out of Shotgun Split Y-Flex with 21 personnel, putting a TE and FB/RB in the backfield area alongside the HB, with two receivers split wide on the numbers and a lone flexed TE off the line. The blocking scheme is a standard inside zone track: the offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, reading the down linemen and climbing to second level linebackers while the HB presses the mesh point and reads his blockers for a crease. This is a pure run play with no route combo to protect, so the primary read progression belongs to the ball carrier, who works frontside first, then can bend back if the backside cutback lane opens against overpursuing defenders.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting shallow and crashing downhill fast, expect a run blitz that this play can gash if you press the cutback lane. Identify whether the defense is in a one high or two high safety shell, one high shells often mean an extra run defender in the box that clogs the frontside gap. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and 3-technique to see if they are getting reached or if they are squeezing hard, which tells you whether to stick frontside or bend the run back. User controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side create a natural cutback lane, so watch for a linebacker or safety overcommitting on the fake. Stacked fronts with extra defenders at the line or a heavy nickel blitz package can shut this run down, so have a check play ready if you see eight or more in the box.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box.

Use the FB or extra TE as a lead blocker cue, letting him seal the first second level defender so your HB can press the line and cut off his outside hip.

Pair this play with HB Off Tackle and HB Draw from the same set so linebackers cannot sit on the frontside gap without getting gashed on cutbacks.

Attack early down and distance, especially first and ten or second and short, to keep defensive coordinators honest and set up play action shots later in the drive.

If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap, motion the flexed TE or check to a quick game beater in this set instead of forcing the run into a stacked front.
