Inside Zone Split is a straightforward zone run play out of Shotgun Split Y-Flex with 21 personnel. The offensive line executes an inside zone blocking scheme, sliding as a unit to create a natural running lane while the fullback or second back leads through the hole to seal off a linebacker. The primary read is the frontside gap first, then the runner bounces to the backside cutback lane if the initial hole is clogged, making this a zone-beater run that punishes overpursuing linebackers and undisciplined gap defense.
Defensive Reads
Presnap, check the safety depth and box count since stacked boxes with eight defenders near the line signal a run blitz that can beat inside zone before the back gets going. Key the mike linebacker's first step after the snap, if he flows hard playside without hesitation the cutback lane backside will be wide open. Watch for defensive tackles shading into the A or B gap presnap, which tells you the play call anticipated an inside run and may have extra gap discipline. Against man coverage looks with off corners, expect fewer underneath defenders crashing the box, giving inside zone more room to develop. Beware of blitz packages that send extra linebackers or a safety through the same gap the zone scheme is trying to hit, since a well timed A gap blitz can blow up inside zone before the double team forms.
Usage Tips
Run this play against defenses showing light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box to maximize your blocking numbers advantage.
Use the left trigger or L2 to shift your blocking scheme presnap if you see a defensive tackle shaded hard into your primary running lane.
Pair this with HB Off Tackle and HB Draw from the same Split Y-Flex set to keep linebackers guessing between zone stretch, gap runs, and delayed draws.
On early downs like first and ten or second and short, this play sets up explosive play-action shots later such as PA F Slide once the defense starts cheating linebackers up to stop the run.
Take the cutback lane whenever the frontside linebacker flows too hard toward the play side, since inside zone is designed to hit backside the moment the defense overcommits.
