X PoCo out of Shotgun Split Y-Flex (21 personnel) is a post corner concept built to attack Cover 2 and beat man coverage on the outside. The X receiver on the left runs a corner route while the Y-Flex tight end works a deep post from the middle, creating a natural high low stretch on the safety in the flat footed Cover 2 look. The right side receiver runs an out and up (sluggo style) to stress a hard playing corner, while the backfield shows a check release flow to the left flat as an outlet. Primary read progression starts with the post corner combination (Y post to X corner), then works to the sluggo on the backside if the safety jumps the post.
Defensive Reads
Read the safeties before the snap; two deep safeties sitting at 10-12 yards is a green light for the corner route since Cover 2 corners have to sink and cannot fully cover the sideline void. Watch the flat defender on the X receiver's side after the snap; if he sinks with the corner route immediately, the underneath area opens for the check release back. Man coverage with a single high safety is dangerous for this play if the defense brings a user lurk to the deep middle, since that defender can undercut the post from Y-Flex. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can collapse the pocket before the corner route develops, so identify overload fronts pre-snap and be ready to check into the backside flat or hot route protection. If the corner presses the X receiver at the line, expect a rerouted timing on the corner route, which means holding the ball an extra beat rather than forcing it early.
Usage Tips
Use this play on 2nd and medium to 3rd and long when you expect a two high safety shell, since the corner route is designed to split the deep defenders in Cover 2. Pre-snap, check if the corner over the X receiver is playing outside leverage; if he is shaded inside, the corner route has an even bigger throwing lane. If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, hot route the flat back into a quick option route to give yourself a faster, safer outlet against blitz looks. Pair this play with Y Post from the same set to keep the defense guessing between a true post shot and the post corner combo, since both start with similar tight end action. Sequence this behind HB Draw or Inside Zone Split earlier in a series to get linebackers creeping downhill, opening up the intermediate window for the post route on X PoCo.
