Jet PA Y Cross is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Split Y-Flex 21 personnel that uses jet motion to hold the linebackers before selling a fake handoff. The Y runs a deep dig style crossing route underneath the safeties while the backside receiver stretches the field vertically, giving you a true zone beater against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells. Your primary read is the Y crosser working from the play-action fake, then progress to the deep backside shot route if the middle of the field is capped by a robber or hole defender.
Read the linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash down hard on the jet fake the middle of the field opens up for the Y crosser immediately. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, since Cover 3 with an aggressive flowing Mike linebacker is the easiest coverage to exploit. Watch for a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, as this is the primary threat that can jump the Y crosser route and bait a turnover. Against Cover 1 or Cover 0 man pressure, expect the crosser to work open late once it clears traffic, but be ready to check down quickly if the blitz gets home before the fake sells. Cover 4 quarters shells with disciplined safeties who stay deep and pattern match can shut this down, so look to layer the crosser underneath rather than trying to push it vertically against that shell.
Use jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing with the fake, which opens up the Y crosser working across the formation.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep this is a great shot to test Cover 4 with the crossing route sitting in the void.
Hot route the fullback or extra back into a check release if you see a delayed blitz off the edge, since the play-action fake needs protection time to develop.
Pair this play with Jet Touch Pass and Jet HB Off Tackle earlier in a drive so defenders respect the jet action and bite harder on the fake when you finally call Jet PA Y Cross.
Best used on early downs or third and medium when defenses are more willing to sell out on run support, since the play-action fake loses value on obvious passing downs.
