Tight Base Flex is the 21 personnel answer inside Shotgun, putting two backs in the gun alongside a single tight end while the receivers condense toward the core. Unlike the spread sets in Shotgun that stretch defenses horizontally with three and four wide looks, Tight Base Flex keeps everything compact: the tight end aligns tight to the tackle, the flex back offsets to one side of the quarterback, and the split ends reduce their splits. That alignment forces defenses into base personnel or a heavy nickel, which means you are often throwing at linebackers and safeties instead of dedicated coverage corners.
The set's identity comes from the flexed back. Motioning him out or hot routing him gives you a running back on a linebacker in the slot, and that is the single most reliable matchup advantage in the game. Plays like Mtn H-Angle, Mtn Fk H-Angle, and Mtn H-Choice are built entirely around that isolation, letting the back option route off the defender's leverage while the tight end and split ends occupy the intermediate zones. F Choice Spot works the same principle from the second back, and Dragon Spacing gives you a full field flood that punishes any defense trying to play soft over the top.
On the ground, the compact alignment gives you real run credibility out of Shotgun. Inside Zone, HB Off Tackle, HB Quick Base, and HB Power concepts get extra bodies at the point of attack because the tight end and the second back both block in tight, and the lack of receiver splits keeps defenders in the box where your run blocking can actually reach them. HB Slip Screen is the counter punch when opponents start crashing edges, and the Gadget and 3DRB tags mean this set is built for players who want to feature an elite dual threat back as both a runner and a mismatch receiver.
Check the defender over your flexed back pre-snap. If it is a linebacker, go straight to Mtn H-Angle or Mtn H-Choice and let the option route work off his leverage.
Motion the second back out wide before the snap to identify coverage: if he travels with a defender you have man, if the defense stays put you are throwing into zone and should look for the spot and drag combo in Dragon Spacing.
Use this set on second and short through fourth and short where Inside Zone, HB Off Tackle, and HB Quick Base all threaten the same gap and force the defense to defend the run honestly.
Hot route your tight end on a seam or corner when a linebacker aligns over him, especially against Cover 3, and pair it with the flexed back on an angle underneath for a clean high low.
Keep both backs in protection or block one and release the other when you suspect A gap pressure, and pull HB Slip Screen out once your opponent starts sending extra rushers off the edge.
