Both outside receivers push vertical stems before breaking into deep out routes toward the sideline, the two inside slot receivers settle into shallow hooks/curls around the sticks, and the running back releases from the backfield on a swing/flat route underneath while one inside receiver runs a quick drag across the middle. This is a classic Cover 3 and Cover 4 beater built on horizontal spacing rather than a play-action or RPO concept, and the primary read progression starts with the underneath drag against zone drops before working out to the flat and up to the deep outs based on how the defense flows.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense shows two deep safeties or one, since Dragon Spacing is built to attack both Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with its combination of deep outs and underneath spacing. Key the linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink deep into their zone drops the shallow drag and flat routes will be wide open underneath. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow drag lane or lurking in the middle hook zone, that is the most common way defenses take away the easy completion on this concept. Man coverage with no help over the top is vulnerable to the deep out routes breaking to the sideline, look for corners playing tight man technique pre-snap as a green light. Be wary of disguised blitzes that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the spacing concept relies on the quarterback having time to work through the drag, flat, and out progression.
Usage Tips
Diagnose the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth, if you see two deep safeties expect Cover 4 and prioritize the deep out routes to attack the seams between the corner and safety.
Against single-high looks or Cover 3, work the shallow drag and flat routes first since the spacing concept is designed to put horizontal stress on the underneath zone defenders.
Use your hot routes to convert the drag into a quick hitch or slant if you see a linebacker sitting directly in that throwing lane, especially against Tampa 2 or Cover 6 shells.
This play works best on second and medium to third and medium since the spacing concept gives you multiple layered completion windows without needing a home run shot.
