F Choice Spot out of Shotgun Tight Base Flex is a classic Spot concept built to attack zone coverage, particularly Cover 3. The diagram shows the outside receiver on the left running a vertical go route to clear space, an inline TE/FB running a hitch or option route underneath, the F receiver working an option route out of the backfield that curls into the flat area, a slot receiver running a corner route that breaks off a stick, and the boundary receiver on the right running a flat route to complete the spot triangle. This is a pass play with no play-action or screen action shown, and the primary read progression starts with the corner/flat combo on the right side (high-low read on the flat defender), then works back to the option route in the middle if the corner route is capped, using the vertical route on the left purely as a clear-out.
Defensive Reads
Read the slot cornerback and flat defender pre-snap: if they are sitting in shallow zone drops, the spot concept underneath will still have soft spots but the corner route is riskier. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled linebacker sinking into the middle hook zone since he can jump the option route and take away the check-down read. Cover 3 with a static flat defender is the primary weakness this play exploits because the corner route sits right behind the flat drop and in front of the deep third. Man coverage with an aggressive nickel defender pressing the slot can disrupt the option route release, so expect the quarterback to look toward the flat and TE routes instead. A well-timed cover 2 or cover 4 shell with disciplined curl-flat defenders can squeeze the spot concept, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and check down to the option route underneath.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing zone or man leverage on the slot defender since the corner route over the flat route is the money throw against Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone drops.
If the defense shows two-high safeties, key the flat defender first because the option route in the middle becomes the primary target versus quarters coverage.
Use the vertical route on the backside as a clear-out against single-high safety shells to remove the deep defender from the throwing lane on the corner route.
Pair this play with Mtn H-Choice or Dragon Spacing in your play-calling sequence since both attack similar underneath zones and force linebackers to widen, opening up the corner route window on F Choice Spot.
Best called on second or third and medium since the option route and flat route give the quarterback a built-in checkdown if the corner route is not open, protecting against negative plays.
