HB Quick Base is a designed downhill run play out of the Shotgun Tight Base Flex formation in 21 personnel. The diagram shows the HB aligned offset in the backfield taking a quick dive path through the middle of the formation, hitting the hole fast off the line with the full line firing straight ahead to open a running lane. This is a pure run play with no route concept, so the primary read is the frontside gap read: get downhill immediately and let the blocking up front dictate whether to stick with the dive path or bounce off the initial hole.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify linebacker depth and gap alignment since a stacked box with linebackers crashing downhill will beat this dive before the back can find the crease. Watch for defensive tackles shaded into the play side gap, as a strong interior push from the defense can clog the intended running lane shown in the diagram. Look at safety alignment before the snap. A single high safety who is slow to trigger down on run action gives the HB extra room to break through the second level. Post-snap, key on whether linebackers are reading the dive path and filling immediately, which signals this play should be shelved in favor of a misdirection or pass concept from the same set. This play struggles against heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders through the interior gaps before the blocking can set, so avoid calling it into obvious run blitz looks.
Usage Tips
Use HB Quick Base on early downs when you need a fast-hitting gap run to keep the defense honest against your pass-heavy Shotgun Tight Base Flex play calls.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has stacked the box with six or more defenders, consider audibling to Mtn H-Choice or F Choice Spot instead of running into a loaded front.
Pair this play in sequence with Inside Zone to give the defense two different quick-hitting run looks from the same formation and personnel, making it harder for defenders to key run direction.
Because the dive hits so fast, this play punishes defenses that are slow to fill gaps or that are showing blitz with linebackers creeping up, since the ball is out of the backfield before the blitz can arrive.
Save this play for short yardage or need-a-couple situations where a quick, decisive hit through the line is more valuable than a play with multiple options.
