The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, stepping in unison toward the play side to create combo blocks at the point of attack and seal off backside pursuit. The primary read is the playside A gap first, working through the B gap based on the flow of the linebackers and the initial double team, with the FB leading through the hole to pick up the first free defender.
Defensive Reads
Look for a stacked box with the safety cheating down into the alley since this signals run support and forces you to trust the zone blocking rather than bounce outside. Watch the defensive tackles pre-snap, if they are shaded heavily into the A gaps the interior double teams will have a tougher time securing movement. Key the backside linebacker flow after the snap, if he stays home instead of flowing with the zone action it can clog the cutback lane. Identify blitz packages where linebackers show A gap or B gap pressure pre-snap since inside zone can get stuffed quickly against a well timed nano blitz. This play struggles against odd front looks with a true nose tackle occupying double A gaps, so be ready to check to an outside run if that front is shown.
Usage Tips
Check the depth of the middle linebacker pre-snap since inside zone thrives when the MIKE is aligned deep or shows blitz indicators away from the play side. Use jet motion or shifts if available to identify whether the defense is playing base 4-3 or a nickel sub package before the snap. Hot route the TE into a stalk block if you see an extra defender crashing down on the edge to seal the backside. Pair this play with HB Off Tackle from the same set to keep defenders honest on gap reads since both plays start with similar mesh action but attack different lanes. Best used on early downs or short yardage third down situations where defenses are more likely to play base run fits instead of sub packages.
