Mtn H-Angle out of Shotgun Tight Base Flex is a man beater built around an angle route out of the backfield. The HB releases into an angle route (blue), settling underneath while the TE and outside WR run a corner-flag combo to the flat and sideline, and the backside WR runs a deep crosser to clear space. This is a pure pass play with no play-action or RPO tag, and the primary read progression starts with the HB angle route against linebacker leverage, then works to the flat/corner combo on the play side if the backer widens with the angle route.
Defensive Reads
Watch for the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow he can undercut the HB angle route and jump the primary throw Man coverage on the HB out of the backfield is the biggest indicator this play will win, since the angle route creates natural separation against linebackers in man Zone shells with a flat defender sitting in the underneath third can take away the corner and flat combo, forcing the quarterback back to the angle route User-controlled linebackers who key the backfield motion can bait the quarterback into a bad throw if they sit and read instead of following the motion Cover 3 or Cover 4 with a hard-charging edge blitz can collapse the pocket before the angle route develops, so identify overload blitz looks pre-snap and consider a hot route or check into a quicker throw
Usage Tips
Motion the H-back or HB pre-snap to identify man coverage, if the defender follows across the formation you have a clean angle route matchup to exploit
Use this on third and short or second and medium since the angle route is designed to win quickly against linebackers who cannot mirror the change of direction
Hot route the backside crosser into a deep dig if you see zone shells with two deep safeties, this keeps the underneath defenders honest and opens a passing lane
