5WR Flex Trey is the empty backfield outlier inside Shotgun, running 01 personnel with five receivers and no running back or tight end behind the quarterback. The alignment stacks a trey (three receiver) surface to the strong side with the point man flexed off the line and two receivers split to the weak side, which forces the defense to declare coverage strength before the snap. Unlike the tighter Shotgun sets that keep a back in for protection or a tight end attached for run support, this set trades all pass protection help for five immediate route runners, meaning the defense has to cover the entire width of the field with whatever it has on the field.
The trey surface is the whole point. Three receivers bunched to one side against a two-deep shell means the defense either rotates a safety over the top and leaves the two receiver side light, or it plays balanced and lets you attack the trey side with stacked and layered concepts. That is where Strong Flood, Slot Corner, Hitch Corners, and Verticals Y-Shake live: you are creating three level reads inside a narrow window where zone defenders have to pass off crossing bodies. On the backside, your isolated receiver gets a pure one on one look, and if you have a speed or route running mismatch there, WR Comebacks, Middle Slant, and Stick N Nod give you an easy iso read with a defined win condition.
Because there is no back, every defensive front is essentially a blitz threat, but Madden also rewards you here: five out means light boxes, and QB Zone plus Jailbreak Slot Screen exist specifically to punish defenses that vacate the middle of the field. Empty Stick and Curl Flats give you the quick game answers, Four Verticals and Packer Cross give you the vertical and mesh answers, and Drive Smash plus Packer Curls cover the intermediate zone hole shots. The Gadget tag is accurate: this is a situational package that wins when you know the coverage and lose badly when you guess wrong on protection.
Read the box first: if the defense has six or fewer defenders inside and no obvious blitz shading, QB Zone and Jailbreak Slot Screen are your free yards. If the box is loaded, get to Empty Stick or Curl Flats and take the quick throw.
Use this set on third down and in two minute situations where you need the entire field horizontally, not on first and second down where the total absence of a run threat tips your hand.
Motion the flexed point man before the snap on Four Verticals or Packer Cross to identify man versus zone, then work the trey side against zone and the isolated backside receiver against man.
Slide protect toward the two receiver side and hot route the outside trey receiver to a drag or slant as a built in pressure release, since you have no back to pick up a free rusher.
Against single high, prioritize Slot Corner and Hitch Corners to attack the seam and boundary outside the safety. Against two high, go to Drive Smash, Packer Curls, and Shallow Cross to work the vacated middle of the field.
