Breakdown

Stick N Nod is a quick-hitting stick concept out of Shotgun 5WR Flex Trey, built to get the ball out fast against pressure or man coverage. To the trips side, the inside slot runs a nod (whip) route that breaks outside and up the sideline as the vertical threat, the outside receiver sits down on the stick route breaking flat toward the boundary, and the tight slot receiver runs a shallow drag underneath crossing the field. The backside X runs a straight go route up the numbers to hold the deep defender, while the lone receiver to that side is not shown blocking, indicating a five man protection with no run action attached. The primary read progression starts with the stick route for the quick underneath throw, moves to the nod for the vertical shot against blitz or aggressive corners, and checks down to the drag as the outlet against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a single high safety, since that leaves the nod route matched up on a corner with no deep help over the top Watch the flat defender's depth, if he sits too deep the stick route sits wide open underneath for an easy completion Key the linebacker depth at the snap, a shallow drop signals zone coverage and the drag will find soft grass immediately Man coverage with no safety help on the trips side gets exposed by the nod route's outside break, so user the deep defender to jump that route early A disguised blitz or nano blitz package can beat this play if the backside protection cannot handle a four man rush, so check protection or hot route the running back into a check release before the snap

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to medium since the stick route gives an instant rhythm throw against zone or man

Check the pre-snap alignment of the flat defender and slot corner, if they are shaded inside the nod route will win outside on a whip beater

Hot route the backside go route into a shorter comeback if you see two high safeties bracketing that side, since the go alone will not create separation without a blitz

Pair this call with Curl Flats or Packer Curls in your play-calling sequence to keep defenders guessing between quick game and intermediate shots from the same personnel

Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, prioritize the drag route as your first read since it settles underneath the deep zones and gives a guaranteed completion
