01

2 Sets1 Formation

Overview

01 personnel puts zero running backs, one tight end, and four wide receivers on the field, creating a pure empty backfield passing identity out of sets like Shotgun 5WR Flex Trey and Empty Quads. With five eligible receivers spread across the formation, defenses are pressured into Dime or Quarter packages, which pulls linebackers off the field and turns the tight end into a mismatch piece against smaller DBs. Because every defender must be accounted for in coverage, opponents are forced to show their hand pre-snap, making man or zone reads, blitz looks, and leverage adjustments far easier to diagnose before the ball is snapped.

Strengths

  • Five immediate receiving threats stretch any coverage horizontally and vertically, overloading zone defenders and making Cover 3 and Cover 4 flat and curl responsibilities hard to hold against Quads flood and smash combos.
  • Empty alignment reveals defensive intent pre-snap: motion a receiver and watch whether a defender travels to confirm man coverage, then hot route slants, drags, or wheels to attack it.
  • The flexed tight end creates a size mismatch against nickel and dime corners, giving you a reliable seam, stick, or corner target in the red zone and on third down.
  • Forcing Dime or Quarter personnel removes linebackers and lightens the box, opening QB draws and scrambles against two-high shells, especially with a mobile quarterback.
  • Quads and Trey sets isolate a single receiver on the backside, letting you hand a speed or deep ball WR a one-on-one fade, comeback, or post against a lone corner with no safety help.

Weaknesses

  • Only five blockers are available with no running back to chip or pick up blitzers, so nano blitzes, Cover 0 pressures, and slot corner blitzes can get free rushers before routes develop.
  • There is no true run threat from the backfield, which lets defenses ignore play-action and RPO fakes and commit every defender to coverage or rush without penalty.
  • Opponents can key on the obvious pass tendency by bringing heavy pressure from Dime or Quarter and forcing quick throws, which limits your ability to push the ball downfield on longer developing concepts.
  • Competent users who drop a robber or user-control a hook defender can take away quick game staples like slants and drags, since your hot read options are limited when every receiver is already running a route.
  • Lacking a back or extra tight end, you cannot easily kill the clock or grind short yardage, and repeatedly lining up in empty lets opponents stay in their best nickel or dime pass rush calls all game.
