Breakdown

WR Comebacks out of Shotgun 5WR Flex Trey sends five receivers out with a route mix built to attack cushion coverage. The backside X runs a deep comeback breaking back to the sideline, the two inside slots run vertical seams that hook back into curls, and the two receivers on the strong side stack a deep corner-post read with a short out breaking to the flat. There is no run action or blocking to speak of since all five eligible receivers release, making this a straight dropback pass designed to beat off man and soft zone by working receivers back downhill toward the quarterback. Primary progression starts with the backside comeback against man cushion, then works to the strong side flat/corner combo if the corner sits deep, and finally checks down to the middle curl breaking away from the hook defender.

Defensive Reads

Identify safety depth before the snap, two deep safeties usually signal Cover 2 or Cover 4 which lets defenders sit on comeback breaks if they read the quarterback's eyes quickly. Watch cornerback press alignment, corners playing off at seven or more yards are vulnerable to the comeback since they have to open their hips and flip late. Key the flat defender on the strong side, if a linebacker or slot corner sinks too deep the underneath out route is wide open for an easy completion. Beware Cover 3 sky or buzz looks where a safety rotates down into the shallow curl zone, this can jump the middle curl route and bait a turnover if the quarterback stares it down. Man coverage with no help over the top is where this play struggles most, since comebacks need distance and a good user defender can close on the break before separation is created, so expect this to get shut down against Cover 0 or Cover 1 blitz packages with tight press corners.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and long or third and medium when defenders are playing off coverage and giving up the cushion needed for the comeback routes to work. Check the corner alignment before the snap, if the corner is playing tight man press this play loses value since comebacks need separation created by the break, so consider hot routing the X to a quick out or slant instead. Against zone shells look at the flat/corner combo on the strong side first since a sitting corner defender opens up the underneath out route immediately. Pair this play with Curl Flats or Packer Curls in your call sheet so the defense has to respect both comeback breaks and curl breaks off similar formation looks, keeping linebackers and corners guessing on drop depth. If the user drops a defender into the deep comeback zone, reset your eyes to the two inside seam-to-curl routes since they settle into soft spots against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells.
