Slot Corner out of Shotgun 5WR Flex Trey sends the outermost trey receiver deep on a corner route as the clear-out and primary read, while the two receivers stacked behind him run crossing drags underneath, one settling near the hash and the other continuing across the field. On the backside, the two receivers run mirrored out-and-up style routes that break toward the sideline and stem upfield, giving the quarterback a boundary option away from the trips side. This is a man beater built on the corner route winning one-on-one against outside leverage, with the underneath crossers serving as the zone beater layer and hot route for shorter completions against off coverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap identify single high versus two high safeties, single high leaves the corner route on an island against man coverage which is the biggest vulnerability Watch the slot cornerback or nickel alignment, if he is playing outside leverage the corner route will have room to break open before the safety can rotate over Post-snap track any user-controlled defender flying to the trips side crossers, if the user jumps the shallow routes the deep corner and backside outs are wide open Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can squeeze the shallow crossers, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball longer and take the sack risk Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with safeties sitting deep take away the corner route entirely, defenses should sink their corners to eliminate the sideline throw and trust the underneath defenders to rally
Usage Tips
Key the deep safety before the snap, if he is rotated to the trips side the corner route will be contested so check the backside out routes early
Use empty personnel spacing to force the defense to declare man or zone, if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top attack the corner route immediately
Against zone shells, work the underneath crossing routes since the linebackers have to sort through traffic and often bust the handoff
Pair this play with Middle Slant or Curl Flats in your play-calling sequence so the defense respects the shallow crossers and opens up the deep corner shot
Best called on second or third and medium to long when you need a explosive gain against man coverage or a chain-moving crosser against zone
