Verticals Y-Shake sends four receivers straight up the field on vertical routes, occupying every deep zone landmark from numbers to numbers, while the Y (in-line or slot tight end) runs a shake route that pushes upfield before breaking hard flat across the middle underneath the verticals. The four verts stretch the deep defenders horizontally and vertically, and the Y-shake sits down in the void behind linebackers and in front of deep coverage as the outlet against zone drops. This is a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to isolate seams and the middle hole, with the primary read progression starting on the seam verticals for a one-on-one shot deep before working down to the Y-shake as the underneath zone-buster.
Read the safety depth and width pre-snap, since a two-high shell that widens post-snap signals Cover 2 and opens the seams for the verticals Watch the middle linebacker or a user-controlled defender sitting in the hole, since that defender is the direct key on whether the Y-shake route has a throwing lane Against Cover 3, the deep middle defender rotating late is your tell that the shake route will have room before the safety can close Man coverage with no help over the top is a red flag defense, since verticals against man with a deep half safety missing can get beaten instantly by any of the four vertical routes Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting just underneath the shake route depth, since that defender can jump the throw if the QB does not fully clear the linebacker level before pulling the trigger
Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties or a single high safety to decide whether you are attacking Cover 2 seams or the Cover 3 middle hole
Against Cover 2, target the seam verticals right as the safeties widen to the numbers, since the void between the safety and corner opens fastest
Against Cover 3, work the Y-shake into the middle hole vacated by the deep third defender, since that is the primary zone-beater window versus single-high looks
Use this on second and long or third and medium when you need a explosive shot play but also want a checkdown option if the deep verts are covered
Pair this with Four Verticals earlier in a series to condition the defense to bite on the pure vertical stretch, then dial up Y-Shake so the shake route catches linebackers cheating deep and creates an even bigger throwing window underneath
