Duo Twins Flex is the 21 personnel answer inside Shotgun that lets you run gap and zone concepts without tipping heavy run down. You get a twins alignment to one side, a flexed back or tight end detached to the other, and a lead back sitting next to the quarterback in the gun. That second back is the whole point: he is your Duo and Counter lead blocker, your slip screen target, and your motion piece all in the same formation. Unlike four-wide Shotgun sets that force the defense into nickel and dime, Duo Twins Flex invites base personnel onto the field, then attacks it with route concepts that base linebackers cannot cover.
Read the presnap box count first: if the defense stays in base with a linebacker over your flexed back, go straight to Mesh Switch Rail or Texas X-choice and target that mismatch.
On second and medium, run HB Counter and Inside Zone Split from the same look to set up HB Lead Draw and PA Flood H-corner later in the drive.
Hot route the lead back to a flat or angle route when you see man free, since he releases uncovered against most base linebacker assignments.
Motion the flexed player across the formation to identify man versus zone, then check into HB Slip Screen if the defense chases with an aggressive user.
Use PA Flood H-corner after establishing HB Base, because the play action hold pulls linebackers up and opens the intermediate corner route behind them.
