Breakdown

HB Counter out of Shotgun Duo Twins Flex is a power run play that uses a pulling guard and lead blocker from the 21 personnel backfield to create a misdirection point of attack. The offensive line sells zone flow one way while the backside guard and fullback wrap around to lead through the hole, forcing linebackers to false step before the ball carrier hits the counter lane. The primary read progression starts with the play side double team, then the puller as the lead blocker, and finally the backer fill or safety in the box before deciding to bounce outside or stick it inside the tackle box.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive ends crashing hard down the line pre-snap, that indicates a scrape exchange or counter trey trap call from the defense meant to squeeze the puller. Identify if the play side linebacker is sitting square instead of flowing with the initial zone action, a square backer usually means the defense has diagnosed counter action and will fill the puller's lane immediately. Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety cheating into the box at seven yards or closer signals run support that can beat this play by getting downhill on the cutback lane. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run fits usually lets this play hit clean since it removes an extra second level defender from the box. Heavy blitz packages with both linebackers crashing the line at the snap can blow up the pulling guard's path, so if you see stacked fronts or a nano blitz alignment, be ready to check to a quicker hitting run like HB Base instead.

Usage Tips

Run this out of a run heavy personnel count when the defense shows light boxes with six or fewer defenders inside the tackle box.

Check the linebacker depth pre-snap, if both backers are sitting shallow at four yards or less they can diagnose the counter step and flow fast, so consider an audible in that situation.

Use the fullback and pulling guard as your visual key, delay your left stick input until the puller clears the hole so you do not outrun your blocking.

Pair this with Inside Zone Split and HB Lead Draw from the same set so defenders cannot key pulling linemen versus zone steps, this keeps second level defenders honest and slows their play recognition.

Best called on early downs or short yardage third downs when the defense is in base personnel and not selling an obvious run blitz look.
