The primary read is simple: the quarterback looks off the underneath defenders for a beat, then immediately delivers to the HB once he clears the line of scrimmage with blockers set up in front.
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment: linebackers crashing hard off the edge or shading heavily toward the box signal a blitz look that this screen is designed to exploit. Watch for man coverage shells with corners in press, since man defenders trailing receivers downfield often lose track of the HB slipping out to the flat. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled defender spying the backfield or sitting in a shallow zone drop, as a disciplined spy or lurking linebacker can jump the screen and blow it up for a loss. Defensive ends and edge rushers who stay disciplined and do not fully commit upfield can string this play out, so contain-based fronts and read-and-react defenses shut this down quickly. If the defense shows a heavy blitz package with five or more rushers, expect the screen to hit big unless a defender is specifically keying the running back's release.
Call this play when you see linebackers creeping toward the line pre-snap or a defense that has been bringing pressure on early downs, since the screen naturally punishes overpursuit and blitz packages. Use it on second or third down and short to medium yardage when defenses expect a dropback pass and are selling out to rush the passer.
