HB Base out of Duo Twins Flex is a gap scheme dive run that hands the ball to the HB and asks him to press the interior gap before bouncing based on the flow of the down blocks. With 21 personnel on the field, the fullback or extra TE-like blocker seals the frontside gap while the offensive line double teams the nose to create a natural crease. This is a run play with no play-action or RPO element, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is backside cutback lane first, then bounce to the frontside edge if the double team gets movement.
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth: stacked linebackers sitting tight to the line signal run support and a likely gap fill, which favors the cutback lane. Watch safety alignment: a single high safety shell often means the box is loaded with an extra defender, making this dive tougher to spring unless the offensive line wins the double team. Post-snap, key the defensive tackle's initial step: if he gets doubled and driven back, the frontside bounce lane opens, but if he holds his ground, cut backside immediately. Beware user-controlled linebackers flowing hard downhill on the snap, since they can beat blocks to the mesh point and blow up the dive before the back presses the hole. This play struggles against odd-front, gap-sound defenses with a nose tackle anchored in the A-gap, so if you see that pre-snap, consider motioning or checking to HB Lead Draw or HB Counter instead.
Run this on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium, to stay on schedule without tipping pass tendencies.
Check the box count before the snap: if the defense has six or more defenders inside the tackles, consider audibling to HB Slip Screen or Mesh Traffic instead since the dive will get clogged.
Use manual player lock on your HB post-snap to press the hole late and let the double team develop, then trust your blocks and cut off the lead blocker's hip.
Pair this with HB Counter and Inside Zone Split in the same drive to keep linebacker flow guessing, since all three plays start with similar backfield action but hit different gaps.
Against aggressive user blitzers, snap the ball quickly with a hard count to catch defenders jumping the gap, since HB Base wins when the frontside double team gets a clean initial push.
