Mesh Traffic is a man beater built around the classic mesh concept, with two receivers crossing shallow at the same depth to create natural traffic that rubs off man defenders. Out of 21 personnel in the Shotgun Duo Twins Flex formation, the extra back and tight end provide additional short and intermediate outlets while at least one receiver works a deeper crossing or dig route to punish linebackers who overcommit to the mesh point. The primary read progression starts with the shallow mesh crossers underneath, works to the deeper crosser or dig on the second read, and checks down to the backfield outlet as the last resort if man coverage clogs both crossing lanes.
Identify man coverage pre-snap by looking for press corners aligned tight to receivers and a single high safety, since this is when the mesh rub creates the most separation. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker or safety sitting in a shallow zone lurk, since a smart user defender can rob the mesh crossers if he reads the quarterback's eyes early. Key the middle linebacker's depth at the snap, if he is shallow and reading run flow he is vulnerable to the mesh point rub, if he sits deep in a hook zone the deeper crosser becomes the better answer. Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined underneath defenders will squeeze the crossing lanes, so be ready to check down to the backfield outlet instead of forcing the mesh throw. Recognize overload blitz packages from the defense's boundary side, since the extra back in 21 personnel is often needed for pass protection and cannot release into the route if a blitzer comes free.
Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like press corners and a single-high safety shell, since the mesh point rub is far more effective against man than zone.
If you see off man or zone, hot route one of the shallow crossers into a quick slant or option route to give yourself a faster answer against zone drops.
Use this on second and medium to long or third and medium, situations where the defense is likely to play man to take away easy completions.
Pair this with HB Base or Inside Zone Split earlier in a series to get linebackers flowing downhill, then hit Mesh Traffic to expose them chasing crossers out of their run fits.
Follow up with Mesh Switch Rail later in the series once the defense starts jumping the initial mesh crossers, since the switch release forces defenders to reroute and buys extra separation.
