Breakdown
Stick N Nod is run from a five-wide Empty Base Flex look out of Shotgun, spreading the defense sideline to sideline with no back in the backfield. Both outside receivers push vertical seams up the numbers, the inside slot to the boundary side runs a nod route (a hard stem up the field before sitting down), and the tight end (or slot) executes the classic stick route: a quick angle out that breaks flat toward the sideline after climbing to the sticks. The playside receiver next to the formation core hooks up on a stick route into the flat while the middle read climbs vertical and cuts back down, giving the quarterback a true stick concept married with a nod read against zone. Primary progression is stick to flat first, working to the nod route on the levels read, with verticals as the home run outlet against man coverage or blown zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and leverage; a single high safety usually signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which are vulnerable to the stick-flat combo underneath. Watch the flat defender and curl-flat linebacker; if they widen with the stick route, the nod route sitting down behind them becomes the window for the quarterback. Man coverage with inside leverage on the slot receiver invites the nod route’s hard stem and settle to shake the defender for separation. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can bracket the outside verticals, so user the deep half safety to stay on top and force the check down to stick or nod. Disciplined zone defenses that sink linebackers into passing lanes and squeeze the stick route will bait the quarterback into a covered read, so watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting on the stick concept.
Usage Tips
Use empty formations pre-snap to force the defense to declare coverage; if a linebacker walks out to match the slot, you likely have zone or man to exploit with the stick-flat combo.
Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells, work the stick route to the flat first since it sits in the soft spot below the flat defender and in front of the curl-flat player.
If you see press man or Cover 0 pre-snap, hot route the vertical routes to keep working or bang the nod route immediately since defenders will be trailing off the line with no safety help underneath.
Pair this play with Stick and Choice Stick Nod in the same set to keep defenses guessing between two similar stick concepts, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.
Best used on third and short to third and medium since the stick route settles right around the sticks for an easy conversion read.
