Breakdown
Mtn Switch Comeback is an empty formation dropback pass out of Shotgun Empty Base Flex that uses a pre-snap switch release concept on the left side to confuse man coverage leverage. The backside slot runs a corner route up top while the outside receiver on that side works a deep comeback, and the two receivers crossing at the snap create traffic that disrupts press or man defenders trying to stay attached. On the right side the isolated receiver runs a quick out and up, and the inside receiver right of center runs a shallow drag across the field as an underneath checkdown against zone drops. This is primarily a man beater built off the switch release, with the comeback as the first read and the drag as the built in hot route against pressure.
Defensive Reads
Read the cornerback over the switch release receivers before the snap, aggressive press man is vulnerable to the switch confusing his assignment and giving up the comeback. Watch for a deep half safety rotating late, since a two high shell that stays two high can jump the comeback route if the defender reads the quarterback's eyes. Identify any user controlled defender lurking underneath the drag route, since a spot dropper sitting in that shallow zone can bait a checkdown throw into a turnover. Zone coverage with a flat defender sitting on the drag and a corner sinking into a deep third can take away both the underneath and comeback options, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball longer. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge opposite the switch release put pressure on the quarterback before the comeback route has time to break, so check protection or plan for a quick checkdown.
Usage Tips
Use this on second or third and medium when defenses expect a quick game concept, since the comeback route needs a cushion to sit down in.
Check the corner's pre-snap depth before the snap, if he is playing tight press without help over the top the switch release at the snap should spring the comeback open immediately.
Against man coverage, key the switch release first since crossing traffic forces defenders to fight through picks and lose their man beater leverage.
Pair this with Mtn Switch Verts or Mtn Switch Flood in the same set to keep the defense guessing on whether the switch release is going deep or settling into a comeback.
If the defense shows heavy pressure looks or a nano blitz, hot route the drag into a quicker breaking route or check it down immediately since the comeback takes time to develop.
