Corner Up is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Empty Base Flex that isolates the boundary with a post/corner combo while stretching the field vertically on the backside. The outside receiver at the top runs a corner route while the receiver stacked inside cuts up on a post, creating a natural rub that forces man defenders to fight through traffic. On the right side the slot runs an out and up while the far outside receiver takes the top off the defense with a straight vertical, giving the QB a deep shot if the corner route gets picked off by coverage. This is primarily a man beater thanks to the natural pick at the top of the formation, but the vertical and out and up combo on the right give it enough answers to also stress single high zone shells. Primary read progression starts with the corner route off the rub, moves to the vertical seam release on the right, and checks down to the out and up breakpoint as a late window against zone.
Defensive Reads
Check the leverage of the outside cornerback on the corner route side pre snap, since inside leverage invites the natural rub to spring the corner route wide open against man coverage. Read the free safety depth and rotation after the snap, because a single high safety cheating toward the top of the formation signals the defense is selling out to stop the corner route and leaving the backside vertical or out and up in space. Watch for user controlled linebackers dropping into the middle of the field, since a lurking defender in the intermediate zone can undercut the out and up route on the right if the QB holds the ball too long. Identify press man corners at the snap, since this concept is built to beat aggressive press technique through the natural pick, but it struggles against soft zone shells like Cover 3 sink where defenders sit underneath the corner route. Recognize blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge, since the empty backfield offers no extra protection and the QB must climb the pocket quickly to hit the corner route or vertical before pressure arrives.
Usage Tips
Look for man coverage indicators pre snap like tight press alignment on the outside receivers before committing to the corner route side, since the natural rub at the top is designed to beat man to man leverage.
If you see a single high safety shaded toward the corner route side, hot route the outside vertical on the right into a deep comeback or dig to give yourself a zone beater answer instead of forcing the corner throw.
Use this play on second and long or third and medium situations where the defense is more likely to sit in man coverage to defend the sticks, since the pick concept at the top thrives when defenders are playing tight technique.
Pair this call with Y Corner or Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical shots and quick game, forcing linebackers to respect both the deep corner route and the short stick concept off similar formation looks.
Against teams that user the deep half safety, throw off the pick quickly before the safety can rotate over and help on the corner route, since hesitation lets the user defender close the window.
