Hoss Y Juke lines up in Empty Base Flex out of Shotgun with five receivers stretched across the formation, giving the QB a clean pre-snap read of the coverage shell with no run action to disguise the pass. The two outside receivers run vertical go routes to stretch the deep boundary, the inside slot receivers push straight hitches (hoss routes) to sit down at the sticks, and the Y (TE) runs a juke/option route breaking inward against the second-level defenders. This is a quick game concept that beats both man and zone coverage, with the primary read progression going from the Y juke route in the middle of the field first, then working outside to the hoss hitches, and finally to the go routes if a defender bites and opens up the deep shot.
Watch the middle linebacker or nickel defender assigned to the Y juke route since his initial drop and angle tells you whether he can wall off the inside break. Check safety depth before the snap: two deep safeties splitting the field usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4, which opens up the juke route in the seam. A single high safety signals Cover 3, which means the hoss hitches sitting at the sticks become the quick answer against the underneath zone defenders. Look for cornerbacks pressing at the line, since that usually means man coverage and the juke route's inside break will create instant separation. If you see a defender lurking in the shallow middle zone post-snap, that is a user-controlled defender baiting the juke route throw, so be ready to pump and go to the outside go routes instead.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz or coverage rotation before the snap. Key the safeties: if they stay deep and split the field, hit the Y juke route underneath since the middle will be soft. Against man coverage, the juke route's angle break creates natural separation, so trust it against tight man-to-man. If you see Cover 2 with the corners squatting on the hitches, look to the go routes on the outside since the safeties can't cover both verticals. Pair this play with Verticals or Four Verts concepts earlier in a drive so defenders respect the deep threat, then come back to Hoss Y Juke to punish defenders sitting on the sticks. This play is best called on third and short to medium since the hoss hitches convert quickly, but it also has home run upside on any down if the defense sells out on the shorter routes.
