Trail Shake lines up in Shotgun Empty Base Flex with five receivers spread across the formation and no running back in the backfield. The two outside receivers run vertical seams up the numbers, the inside slot receiver on the left runs a short vertical to the flat, and on the right side the play features a trail concept where one receiver runs an in-breaking shake route underneath while the other works back outside toward the sideline off the same stem, creating a natural pick and separation combo. This is a man beater built around the shake action to shed tight coverage, with the two verticals stretching the deep zones so the primary read progression starts with the trail/shake combo on the right before working to the vertical seams if the underneath is taken away.
Read the cornerback leverage on the trail side pre-snap, outside leverage tells you the shake route back to the sideline will be open first. Watch for a user lurking underneath the shake route, since a spy or rat linebacker sitting in the throwing lane can jump this combo and bait a turnover. Identify single high safety shells since Trail Shake struggles against a robber concept that sits in the middle of the field reading the quarterback's eyes. Key the slot cornerback's depth at the snap, if he sinks quickly into a zone drop rather than mirroring the shake, expect a zone shell and adjust your progression to the vertical seams instead. Watch for a corner blitz off the trail side edge, since the shake route's blocking assignment leaves that area exposed and the quarterback needs a hot read ready.
Use Trail Shake on third and medium when you expect man coverage since the shake route is designed to create instant separation against a trailing defender.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two deep safeties, prioritize the shake route quickly before the underneath defender can undercut it.
Against press man on the outside verticals, consider a quick release hot route or use hard flick to help the receiver clear the jam faster.
Pair this play with Stick or Y Shallow Cross from the same set to keep the defense honest on shorter routes, then hit them with Trail Shake once they start jumping underneath throws.
Use Verticals or Deep Flood earlier in a drive to soften the safeties, then come back to Trail Shake once the defense starts sitting on shorter zone drops.
