Levels Switch is a five-man empty progression concept built to attack zone coverage with a true levels stack on the field side. The two outside receivers on the right run a switch release into a deep out and a corner-breaking dig that crosses under it, while the inner slot runs a shallow drag underneath both, creating three stacked read levels for the quarterback. On the backside, the far receiver runs a vertical seam and the tight end runs a quick out and up, giving the QB a two-man read away from the levels concept if the defense rotates hard to the trips side.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flow of the underneath linebackers post snap, since if they widen with the shallow drag it opens a throwing lane for the dig sitting behind them. Zone coverages like Cover 2 and Cover 3 struggle to defend the stacked levels because the corner route occupies the deep defender while the dig settles in the vacated intermediate zone. Man coverage with no help over the top is vulnerable to the switch release confusing the corner assignments, so look for a natural pick or rub at the top of the stem. If the defense shows a hard rotation to the trips side with an extra defender crashing down, key the backside seam route since that usually signals a blitz or robber look leaving the seam window open. Defenses that play a true Cover 4 or match quarters with disciplined linebacker spacing can wall off both the drag and the dig, forcing the quarterback to eat the ball or check down late in the progression.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the corner over the levels stack is playing off or press, since off coverage lets you rip the shallow drag underneath immediately for a easy chain-mover.
If you see a two high shell with the safeties sitting deep, target the dig sitting down in the intermediate window between the linebackers and the safety before the corner route breaks open.
Use the backside seam as a hot route answer against single high safeties rotating fully to trips, since the vertical can win one-on-one against a corner playing bail technique.
Pair this play in your call sheet with Verticals or Verticals Under to condition the defense to expect a full field stretch, then come back to Levels Switch to punish zone defenders sitting on the deep routes.
Best used on second and medium to third and short since the shallow drag and dig give you a high floor conversion while the corner route provides an explosive shot if the safety bites on the dig.
