Divide Slot Fade lines up out of Shotgun Empty Base Flex with 11 personnel, spreading five receivers across the formation with no running back in the backfield. On the backside, two receivers run a crossing shallow-cross combo underneath while the outside receiver breaks vertical up the sideline, creating a natural pick and rub concept designed to spring separation against man coverage. To the play side, the inside slot runs a quick out/flat route while the outside receiver stems into a fade up the boundary, and the tight end (X in the diagram) runs a corner route breaking outside to occupy the deep quarter. The primary read starts with the fade one-on-one against the corner, progresses to the tight end corner route if the safety rotates to the fade, and works back to the shallow cross/flat combo underneath as the checkdown against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Watch the corner alignment on the outside fade route pre-snap: if he is playing off with a deep safety rotated over the top, the fade is covered and you should progress inside. Key the safety rotation after the snap, since a single high safety rolling toward the fade side leaves the tight end corner route open in the vacated deep zone. Look for user-controlled defenders sitting in the shallow cross lane, as a smart user will lurk there to jump the underneath combo and bait a mistake. Cover 2 shells with hard corners funneling the fade to the flat defender tend to shut this play down, so avoid forcing the fade throw into two-man unless you have a clean matchup. Blitz-heavy zero coverage looks are dangerous here since there is no back to check release, so identify pressure early and get the ball out quickly to the shallow cross as a hot route answer.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the corner over the outside fade is playing off or press man because this play thrives when you can throw a back shoulder fade against press coverage with no safety help over the top.
Check the safety shell before the snap: if you see a two high shell rotate to one high after the snap, work your eyes to the tight end corner route since the deep half defender likely bit on the fade.
Use the shallow cross and flat combo on the backside as your answer against zone coverage or when the fade and corner are both blanketed, since those routes settle in soft spots against Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone drops.
This play excels on the goal line or in fade-friendly red zone situations where you have a size mismatch on the outside receiver running the fade.
Pair this play with Y Corner or Verticals in your play-calling sequence to keep defenses honest on vertical shots, then come back to Divide Slot Fade once the defense starts cheating a safety toward the underneath crossers.
