Breakdown

Scissors Drive lines up out of Empty Base Flex in Shotgun with 11 personnel, spreading five eligible receivers across the formation with no running back in the backfield. To the boundary side, the two receivers run a drive combo: the inside receiver drives across the formation on a shallow drag while the outside receiver runs a return route breaking flat off a vertical stem, creating a natural rub. On the field side, the two inside receivers cross paths in a scissors concept, one breaking deep to the corner and the other sitting down into a corner-post read, while the outside receiver runs a quick out to the flat. This is a route-combination pass designed to beat both zone and man coverage by manipulating leverage with the crossing scissors action, and the primary read starts with the scissors concept before working back to the shallow drag underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify safety depth and spacing since Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with static safeties are the primary targets this play attacks with the scissors crossing routes. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the intermediate middle since he can undercut the shallow drag route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Man coverage with no safety help over the top can be had if the corner route wins deep in the scissors concept, but tight man coverage on the drag can force the quarterback into a checkdown. Key the flat defender on the field side since he has to choose between the shallow out route and staying deep enough to bracket the corner route, creating a natural conflict. Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers will pressure this play quickly since there is no running back to help in protection, so identify sim pressure or overload blitzes pre-snap and get the ball out on the drag or flat as a hot answer.

Usage Tips

Check pre-snap for two-high shells since the scissors concept to the field side is built to exploit Cover 2 and Cover 4 by forcing the safeties to choose between the corner route and the post breaking underneath it.

If the defense shows single-high or press man, hot route the shallow drag on the boundary side into a speed option or option route to give yourself a quick answer against man leverage.

Use this on second and medium or third and short to medium distances since the shallow drag and flat route give the quarterback a quick checkdown if the deep scissors routes are covered.

Pair this play with Levels Switch or Strong Curl in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both deep crossing shots and intermediate curl breaks from the same empty formation.

Look off the safety toward the scissors side before working back to the drive concept, since holding the deep defender with your eyes opens up the shallow crosser against zone drops.
