Reload Inside Zone lines up out of Shotgun Empty Base Flex with 11 personnel and uses pre-snap motion to bring a receiver across the formation into the backfield, reloading him as an extra blocker or lead runner before the snap. The offensive line executes a standard inside zone blocking scheme, taking zone steps and working combo blocks to the second level while the QB reads the mesh point for a downhill handoff. This is a zone run play designed to attack the interior gaps, with the primary read being the frontside A or B gap based on the flow of the down linemen and linebacker fill.
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check if the motion man draws a defender across the formation, that confirms man coverage and a lighter box. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, linebackers sitting shallow and reading run fits will flow hard to the reload action, so a cutback lane can open on the backside. This play struggles against gap-control fronts with a shaded nose and disciplined edge defenders who stay square and do not overpursue the reload motion. Look for a user-controlled linebacker spying the mesh point, if the user flows too aggressively downhill on the reload fake, the cutback lane becomes the primary answer. Zone coverage shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with linebackers dropping into hook zones can still be vulnerable if those linebackers key the motion rather than the interior gaps.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone, if a defender travels with the motion man it confirms man coverage and opens up run lanes since that defender is now out of the box.
Check the box count before the snap, if you see six or fewer defenders in the box this is a green light run situation.
This play pairs well with RPO Q Stick Draw and RPO Alert Draw Stick in the same set since all three start with a similar zone action look, keeping linebackers honest and off their run keys.
On early downs use Reload Inside Zone to establish the run, then set up Reload PA Flood or Reload PA Shake Bubble later in the drive off the same reload motion for a play-action window.
Avoid this call against heavy blitz packages with extra defenders walked into the box, since the interior gaps get clogged and there is no RPO tag to bail you out.
