Mtn Return Y-Shake

Breakdown

Mtn Return Y-Shake lines up in Shotgun Deuce Close with a pre-snap motion tag that shifts the formation before the snap. Off the snap, the outside receiver to the motion side runs a deep comeback while the inside slot works a vertical seam, and on the opposite side the Y (in-line TE) runs a shake route that breaks outside into a corner-flat toward the boundary while the backside X clears out on a deep vertical. The single blue route out of the backfield area is a short angle route that sits underneath as a check down against pressure. This is a zone beater play designed to attack the flat and intermediate corner zones, with the Y-Shake route as the primary read and the backside vertical clear-out as the window opener.

Defensive Reads

Read the flat defender to the Y-Shake side immediately after the snap since a slow or aggressive flat drop tells you whether the corner-flat window will be open. Check the deep half safety on the motion side pre-snap, if he shows two high shell alignment the comeback route has a bigger throwing window against soft zone coverage. Watch for a linebacker sinking into the intermediate zone underneath the seam route, this is the defense's way of taking away the quick vertical read. Man coverage that follows the motion across the formation signals blitz or man match concepts, so be ready to work the shake route into rub leverage against a trailing defender. Disguised zone blitzes will show late linebacker movement toward the line, if you see this pre-snap get the ball out quickly to the short angle route as your checkdown outlet.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.

If the defense shows a two high shell, target the Y-Shake route since the corner breaking route will settle into the void between the flat defender and the deep half safety.

Against single high safety looks, be ready to hit the vertical seam route early since the defense often rotates a linebacker or nickel to help over the top.

This play works best on second and medium to long yardage situations where you have room to let the Y-Shake route develop after the break.

Pair this play with Mtn Y Corner or Mtn Y Option from the same set so the defense has to respect both the shake breaking outside and a hard corner route, keeping zone defenders honest on their landmarks.
