Chip PoCo X Dig is a three level man and cover 2 beater out of Shotgun Deuce Close 12 personnel. The outside TE runs a post corner that chips before releasing vertically to attack the seam and break to the corner, while the inside receiver runs a dig that crosses the middle underneath the post corner route. Both boundary receivers run flat routes to clear out underneath space and hold the corners, and the running back checks release into a short outlet route. The primary read progression starts with the post corner against Cover 2 and man coverage for the explosive shot play, then works down to the dig running through the vacated middle if the safety jumps the corner route.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells since Cover 2 with a hard flat corner is the ideal shell for the post corner to work against. Watch cornerback press alignment on the outside TE, if he is pressed and without safety help the post corner route can beat man coverage over the top. Post snap, track the playside safety's first two steps, if he sinks under the post corner route you must reset your eyes to the dig running underneath. This play struggles against Cover 3 with a sky safety rotating over the top of the corner route, so be ready to check down to the flat or the running back's release. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in a lurk technique in the middle of the field, since he can undercut the dig route if the quarterback is late on the read.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment pre-snap because two high shells with soft corners are the biggest indicator to trust the post corner route as your first read.
If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, hot route the flat routes into shallow drags or stick them to open up the sideline for the post corner.
Use this play on second and long or third and medium situations where the defense is likely sitting in zone shells expecting a checkdown.
Pair this with Mtn Y Corner or PA Deep Cross earlier in a drive to condition the defense to bite on shorter routes, then hit the post corner for the explosive play once safeties creep up.
Against aggressive user controlled safeties who key the corner route, progress immediately to the dig since the middle of the field will be wide open.
